T-minus 11 days and counting…

I CANNOT believe FS:X is just around the corner….

It is getting really exciting as everything is starting to come together. We have announced our venue, the fantastic papermill at Guardbridge, which I think is very Paris Fashion Week (but of course slightly chillier)!

So I thought I would whet your appetites with some of the designers we have confirmed thus far….

So if i were you I would make that last minute trip to Edinburgh or raid your friends wardrobes to find that perfect FS outfit! Probably this won’t apply if your a boy, although who knows maybe there is a degree of DJ swapping that we girls are blissfully unaware of?!?

SHOWstudio.com

Hello everyone!

Happy New Year…FS:X is really hotting up as we confirm designers and organize our second photo shoot, so keep your eyes peeled for the second edition of our magazine. All very exciting. Keep checking out our designer page as we will be updating it regularly.

However, i thought I would share with you an exhibition that I went to recently at Somerset house which was entitled ‘A Fashion Revolution’. It displayed all the work from the website www.showstudio.com which is incredibly creative as it fuses together the work of creative people. The premise is that a ’studio’ is used by artists, image-makers, musicians, models, designers and photographers, basically the site seeks to display creative acts from conception to completion whilst blending together different genres of creativity. It is a little out there but I love it, the first time the site went live on the 27th of November 2000 it featured Kate Moss singing with Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream!!!!

The exhibition was no less intriguing ranging from a giant statue of Naomi Campbell which you could write on using a very clever laser pen, to a booth wallpapered with eighteenth century pornography, to a really cool piece based on show studio’s designer download program which allows you to download designers patterns created by leading designers. Whilst extremely artistic things often make me raise an eye brow, I thought this exhibition was just about insane enough to work! I think our theme of ‘A Fashion Playground’ ties into what they were doing in the exhibition i.e making fashion and art fun rather than overtly pretentious!

Heavy Metal

My first ever Thanksgiving dinner last week was an extremely stylish affair. However, despite the unbelievably delicious spread, and my wine and food induced coma, I was drooling over one thing only – the incredible, statement necklace that one of my hostesses was sporting.   On enquiry I was amazed to discover that it was the creation of FS:X’s very own model, Isobel d’Andelot Holland Oliphant, seen below wearing her Bling Crosby necklace.

CNV00018-1

It’s the classic, can’t-find-the-perfect-gift-so-make-your-own story.  Yet, while for most of us this would involve fabricating some kind of glittery, painty birthday card emblazoned with awkward pictures and inside jokes, Isobel started making necklaces that have caused celebrities to swoon, (the model, Doutzen Kroes, fell in love when she saw Iso wearing one at the Stella McCartney party for Fashion’s Night Out in New York), and boutiques to start taking orders, (Little Miss Drama on Nantucket Island).  The necklaces are a beautiful combination of plaited brass chain and crystal – the most elegant heavy metal you’ve ever seen.

You can order the d’Andelot line online at: www.wix.com/dandelot/international.  Isobel is currently taking orders for delivery after the upcoming holiday.  I’m wild for the Tip Your Waitress, which would look phenomenal with a simple LBD, and the Madeline, which would be the chicest way to toughen up a floral dress in the summer.   I’ve just put one of these babies right at the top of my Christmas list!

Thanks to Isobel for letting me rage about her jewellery!

See you out tonight friends,

Have you seen my cape?

At the FS:X photoshoot on Wednesday we were subjected to some of the worst weather conditions I have experienced in my university career thus far.  Rattling around in a succession of distinctly door-less warehouses we were forced to deal with biting winds and pouring rain all day long.  Anticipating the worst, the previous evening I had sent out a frantic e-mail to the models – quote: “Please bring warm outer layers because the venue is EXTREMELY cold – mittens, gloves, scarves, socks, hats, coats – you name it, BRING IT”.

The following morning, as I layered myself up I realised that I had forgotten to add one very, very important item to the list – the cape.

The cape is, perhaps unusually, my winter staple.  Ever since I heard in a Radio 4 documentary, (ultimate winter luxury, in bed accompanied by hot chocolate and myriad blankets), that the Velvet Underground’s femme fatale, Nico had favoured the cape as her cold weather wrap of choice, I have been a cape devotee.  And how right I was.  I may have looked like a Mongolian shepherd but I was utterly content, despite the bare legged models shooting me looks that could kill.

To pick up the aforementioned look, head to Urban Outfitters, who currently stock a blanket cape which tucks fairly neatly under a larger coat for the less adventurous.  At A.P.C. you can pick up a neat cable-knit cape, (I’m still kicking myself for not snapping up one of their last year’s plaid capes when I saw it on sale), while American Apparel have got a fleece cape that seriously fits the bill for the St Andrews cold.  I am on the look out for a vintage nurse’s cape from the 1940s, to wear with knee socks and brogues.

Oh, and it’s totally acceptable once you’re cloaked up to get your friends together and make some kind of fashion superhero alliance – in fact, it’s expected.

See you latttter, (probably in the library).

Georgia, writing until Nancy gets back.

xx

PS: Thank you to all models for Wednesday – you are all AMAZING.  Keep checking back for the photos!

Watch out, Snoods about…

Whilst wondering around Spitalfields  market on Sunday, I couldn’t help but notice the invasion of the Snood! Everyone was wearing them and a plethora of stalls were selling them! Whilst our Nordic friends have always sported such an item, us Brits seemed to have suddenly caught on (thank God)…Most certainly I am on the bandwagon after purchasing two faux fur snoods last week. It is fast becoming an addiction and I am quite convinced that they are one of the best inventions of all time…especially for a St Andrews Student. In a nutshell, they are practical (normally I am not such a fan of practical but in this case I think that practicality and style are spectacularly fused) You can just pull them up over your head on those delightful drizzly grey St Andrews days to keep your hair looking presentable (chaps don’t pretend this isn’t also a concern for you!) Also they don’t present the same dilemma as a scarf does in our blustery climate; I have often fallen victim to a gust of wind that has blown my scarf into my face, such an event usually occurs whilst lugging Tesco bags home! Everyone should put the snood on their Christmas list!!!

Vintage Bonanza

I have NEVER been so excited, whilst trawling the Vogue website (which is all I do with my life these days!) I came across this very exciting article…I feel the secret must be shared! Apparently there is a super cheap, underground (not for much longer!) Vintage Fair that takes place on a Sunday. Only hitch is it is in our fair capital-however I figure a weekend in London is actually an excellent idea and as reading week is fast approaching I though I this little nugget is well worth knowing!

The Affordable Vintage Fashion Fair takes place at the Sustainable Studios, 65-71 Scrutton Street, London, EC2A 4PJ. Visit www.vintagefair.co.uk for further information.

In other news, keep you eyes peeled for our model shots on the website!

Partying: FS Style

Hello all,

So, Thursday saw FS Drinks which in short included the committee, the models, a rather large amount of alcohol to lubricate the situation and if my hazy memory serves correctly ALOT of dancing on tables. Please enjoy the images….I think they capture the event perfectly!

Thank goodness I managed to stay out of the photos as I am quite sure it would have been an vile sight! In other news…we had our first photoshoot on Friday so keep checking as I have some classic backstage photos!

Also I would just like to say a huge THANK YOU to the Mermaids who let us have a free reign on their costume cupboard which allowed us to create the ‘Fashion Playground’ image which pops up when you open the website!
